Broken Leg-2020

Zoey’s foot slipped and went under the front edge of a piece of furniture at home. The result was a compound fracture in the lower right leg. She has not had an accidental broken bone since 2014. Needless to say Zoey was not happy. But in her usual style she regrouped before the ambulance arrived and enjoyed the ride to the local hospital. There they attempted to set the leg that day and again the following morning but without success. We were then transferred to London’s Children’s Hospital for surgery.

She had surgery on the 17th. She was very brave throughout all the x-rays and casts coming off and on. By the end of the 9 weeks she had 5 different casts and we did all this as Covid-19 shut down the province. Her physiotherapy sessions where done by video appointment. She was back up and walking by the end of May. She now has a lift on her left shoe because the surgery actually ended up straightening most of the bowing in the lower right leg and now it is 1” longer than the left leg. Zoey adapted to that quickly and appreciated the better balance it gave her.

Zoey loves collecting Beads of Courage and earned enough beads with this experience to fill another entire necklace. Each bead represents a different thing i.e. x-ray, casting, bloodwork, clinic visit, etc. and then there are the beads for her acts of courage, when she was most scared requiring extra bravery!

For more information on the Beads of Courage program go to www.beadsofcourage.ca and on YouTube. It is a wonderful program that makes the toughest days have a great ending.
