Zoey was born to her mother Taylor, 6 weeks early arriving at 3 lbs 8 oz.  Over a 7 week period in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit it was determined that she had a hole in her heart and a soft trachea.

She could only feed by feeding tube insert down her nose to her stomach because  swallowing sent food into her lungs instead of her stomach.  Because of the soft trachea Zoey was not able to cry without her throat collapsing on itself; this created a cough.  Her lungs that were not formed properly, and she was also diagnosed with a duplicated chromosome. This indicated she would have health issues and learning disabilities.

At 4 months weighing 8 pounds she had a g-tube feeding tube inserted in her stomach in London's Children's Hospital.  She had an undiscovered lung infection at this time with the result that she was on a ventilator for 4 days instead of just an hour through the surgery. Although that was a scary week within a few weeks we heard her first real cry.

Body Cast

Body Cast

This picture is Zoey in a body cast due to a break in her thigh. Due to a brittle bone disorder Zoey's bones break much easier than a normal child. July 2014 she unfortunately broke her thigh bone trying to walk. As the thigh bone is the most painful bone to break this has been a stressful time for her and her caregivers. A new wheelchair had to be fitted in order to accommodate the large cast.

Wheelchair

Wheelchair

This is a temporary wheelchair needed for Zoey as her cast was too big to sit. As you can see a bar had to be placed across the legs to stabilize her thigh bone to properly heal and still allow Zoey to move in some way.

Tricycle Ride

Tricycle Ride

Here is Zoey enjoying her modified tricycle which secures her feet in place with blocks and velcro. While fun riding around the house she is also strengthening her legs and ankles as part as her physiotherapy.

Glasses

Glasses

Issues with eye sight are assisted with these special eye glasses. Zoey has gone through 3 pair at $400 a set as they have a very flexible framework. Most plans only cover glasses once every 2 years.

Highchair

Highchair

At the age of 2 her bones were the most fragile. Even dangling legs in highchairs would create a break. At the age of 4 a highchair is still needed to secure her in place due to her small physical size and slow growth.

Walker

Walker

Once Zoey has healed she will be back to practicing walking with her Walker which stabilizes her around her chest while giving her the freedom to use her feet to move around the room.

Standing Tall

Standing Tall

This is her newest piece of equipment which is used with braces on her feet and it securely places her body in a standing position. Standing 90 minutes per day increases the density of brittle bones significantly. Prior to her thigh breaking, it had taken 10 months for Zoey to be able to stand for 90 minutes.

Racer

Before breaking her thigh Zoey was moving her regular wheelchair around like a pro managing quick stops and maneuvering around tight corners.

Surgery

Surgery

Zoey had many visits to the hospital her first year of life. One of which was for a feeding tube as she was unable to swallow and the second surgery was for the hole in her heart. Today she no longer requires oxygen, but continues to still use a feeding tube with some improvement on swallowing.
