We travelled to Shriner's Children's Hospital in Montreal in early March to determine how the new treatments are working to increase her bone density. The good news is Zoey's bone density is improving and she may be ready for surgery on her legs later this year. In order to be able to walk Zoey needs surgery to correct the bowing of the bones of both thighs and both tibias. We will be following her with more tests in the next 4 months before deciding a surgery date. This surgery will start with the thighs to remove the "bend" of the bow, add a metal rod in the centre of the bone and then reattach the bones. The risk if done too soon is the metal rod will break through the bones. If that occurs depending on the amount of damage to the bone it may or may not be able to be repaired meaning there is a risk she may never walk. When we begin the surgeries we will only proceed one leg at a time to see how it heals. For now we wait.
